Position Summary:

Set up grinding machines, such as external, internal, surface, centerless, cylindrical, thread, jig, CNC universal and CNC cylindrical, according to specifications, instructions, standard charts, and knowledge of grinding procedures to grind one piece and/or production.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Reads from blueprint and job order product specifications for dimensions, tolerances, and number of parts to be ground and tooling instructions such as speeds, feed rates, holding fixtures, and grinding wheels to be used.
  • Mounts grinding wheels on spindles with wrenches.
  • Dresses wheels to specifications, using dressing devices.
  • Moves controls to set specified grinding speeds, feed rates, and angle of grinding wheel to workpiece or vice versa.
  • Positions and tightens cams to control depth of cut and length of stroke.
  • Lifts and positions workpieces manually or with hoist, and secures them on machine tables, faceplates, or magnetic chucks, in chuck jaws, or between centers, using wrenches and clamps.
  • Starts machine, moves controls to adjust machine settings, and observes operation.
  • Verifies first-run products for conformance to specifications, using such measuring instruments as micrometers, calipers, and preset gauges.
  • Feeds machine by hand.
  • Direct flow of coolant over cutting area.
  • Measures workpiece prior to grinding to determine amount of material to be removed.
  • Prepares, maintains, and utilizes, Statistical process Control charts.

Job Qualification Requirements:

Training and Experience:

Between 1 and 3 years of trade school, vocational education, work experience, or apprenticeship.  Required to have experience with particular material, product, or precision level, or machine of particular size, type, or trade name.

Physical Demands:  The employee is required to:

  • Stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to the floor.
  • Exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or
  • Exert 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or
  • Exert up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Visual Acuity:  Near acuity and accommodation are required for reading machine dial gauges, blueprints, and precision measuring instruments used in the inspection of parts.

Hearing Ability:  Ability to monitor machine sounds to identify and diagnose changes in order to take appropriate action.

Working conditions:  The employee is subject to;

  • High noise levels form operating machines.
  • Physical hazards from moving equipment and machine parts.
  • Breathing fumes, dust, and mists
  • Skin exposure to oils and cutting fluids.
